Unveiling a new policy on India’s international sports events, especially emphasizing Pakistan, the ministry clarified that bilateral matches would not be played, but there will be no restriction on multilateral tournaments. This means that the team led by Suryakumar Yadav will play in the Asia Cup as per the predetermined schedule. Sources told PTI that this instruction was implemented with immediate effect.

The ministry’s policy states, “India’s approach to Pakistan’s sports events reflects its overall policy of treating that country.”

“As far as bilateral sports events are concerned in each other’s country, Indian teams will not participate in competitions in Pakistan.” Nor will we allow Pakistani teams to play in India, “they further said.

However, it will not affect multilateral events.

“We will not stop the Indian cricket team from playing in the Asia Cup as it is multilateral,” said a source in the ministry.

But Pakistan will not be allowed to come to Indian earth for bilateral competitions. But we will not stop them from multilateral events as we will follow the Olympic charter. ”He further said.

Last month, there was a debate on India’s participation since the Asia Cup program was confirmed, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack in April and after tension in relations between the two countries. At one time there was speculation that the withdrawal of India could be canceled, but in late July, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) ended the suspense by officially announced.

The controversy deepened when the Indian Champions team led by Yuvraj Singh withdrew their names by two matches, including the semi -finals against Pakistan at the World Championship of Legends.

Uncertainty emerged again in Mumbai on Tuesday, when captain Suryakumar was asked about India’s participation on 14 September. The media manager of the team immediately while answering the question instructed the journalists to limit the question to the team selection.

What about multi-national tournaments in Pakistan?
In 2023, the Indian team never received the official approval to go to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Then the ‘Hybrid Model’ came into force, in which Sri Lanka was co-worked to organize all the matches in India.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has since made it clear that there will be nothing like this for the Champions Trophy to be held in 2025. After this, there was an agreement between the two boards that will remain in force till 2027 – whenever Pakistan will host, India’s matches will be at a neutral site, and whenever India hosts, Pakistan’s matches will be at some other neutral site.
