Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane announced on Thursday that he will step down as Mumbai’s captain for the upcoming domestic season, stating it is the right time to pass on the leadership to a younger player.

“Leading Mumbai to championship wins has been a great honor. With a new domestic season approaching, I feel it’s the right moment to give a youngster the chance to lead. That’s why I’ve decided to step down from the captaincy,” Ajinkya Rahane shared on X (formerly Twitter).

During his captaincy, Mumbai broke a seven-year drought by winning the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy. Rahane then led the side to another success in the 2024/25 Irani Trophy, further cementing Mumbai’s strength in domestic cricket.

Despite stepping down from leadership, Ajinkya Rahane assured fans he will continue playing for the side: “I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with @MumbaiCricAssoc to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season.”

With stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shardul Thakur, and India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav in the squad, Mumbai is well-positioned for another strong campaign.
