Significant Drone and Missile Strikes in Ukraine
Kyiv: In a rare and aggressive move, Russia executed a drone and missile strike on western Ukraine overnight, targeting an American-owned electronics facility among other sites. This escalation adds to the uncertainty surrounding US-led initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict that has persisted since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
This recent aerial attack marks one of the most significant offensives by Russia this year, particularly in a region that has largely been spared from such concentrated assaults. The timing coincides with Moscow's discontent regarding key elements of proposed peace agreements.
Last week, US President Donald Trump engaged in discussions about the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House.
Trump has expressed skepticism about Putin's intentions to conclude the conflict, stating that the Russian leader 'talks nice and then he bombs everybody.'
In a social media update, Trump criticized President Joe Biden for not supplying Ukraine with sufficient military support to effectively counter the invasion.
He remarked, 'Winning a war is nearly impossible without launching attacks on the invading nation. It's akin to a sports team with a strong defense but no offensive play. Victory is unattainable under such conditions, just like with Ukraine and Russia.'
The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding any potential adjustments to the types of military aid the US might provide to Ukraine.
Since the discussions at the White House, Russia has reportedly launched nearly 1,000 long-range drones and missiles against Ukraine, according to Ukrainian sources.
European nations are currently deliberating on how to position military resources to deter any potential Russian aggression following the conflict. However, the Kremlin has firmly rejected the idea of NATO troop deployments, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserting that security arrangements for Ukraine without Moscow's involvement are futile.
Lavrov indicated that Putin is open to meeting with Zelenskyy to negotiate peace terms, but only after preliminary issues are resolved by senior officials, suggesting a lengthy negotiation process ahead due to the significant differences between the two sides.
Ukrainian and European leaders have accused Putin of delaying peace talks, hoping to leverage his larger military force to gain more territory.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to lead a conference call with national security advisers from European nations that are expected to contribute to future security guarantees for Ukraine, although the specific participants remain undisclosed.
Military leaders from Ukraine, the US, the UK, Finland, France, Germany, and Italy convened in Washington earlier this week to explore military strategies, according to Joseph Holstead, a spokesperson for the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. However, details of the discussions have not been made public.
An anonymous official mentioned that 'all options are on the table' regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, excluding the deployment of US ground troops.
Military officials are evaluating various aspects of the security guarantee, including its scale and implications for implementation with or without a ceasefire, acknowledging their responsibility to ensure Europe's security.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight, primarily targeting western regions where military aid from Ukraine's Western allies is believed to be stored. The strikes resulted in at least one fatality and 15 injuries.
Zelenskyy condemned the assault, emphasizing that it occurred 'as if nothing were changing at all.'
A US electronics facility near the Hungarian border was among the targets, as confirmed by Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. The Flex factory represents one of the largest American investments in Ukraine, with six workers injured during the attack.
Hunder stated, 'The message is clear: Russia is not seeking peace. They are attacking American businesses in Ukraine, humiliating them.'
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed the strikes were aimed at 'enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex,' asserting that the attack targeted drone manufacturing sites, storage facilities, missile launch locations, and troop assembly areas, while denying any intent to strike civilian targets.
In Lviv, one individual was killed and three others injured as the attack damaged 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten, and administrative structures, according to regional head Maksym Kozytskyi.
Zelenskyy remarked that Moscow has shown no inclination towards meaningful negotiations to conclude the war, urging the international community to impose stronger pressure on Russia, including enhanced sanctions.
In embargoed comments released Thursday, Zelenskyy indicated that plans for security guarantees would become clearer by the end of the following week, expressing his readiness to engage in direct talks with Putin for the first time since the full-scale invasion.
Zelenskyy also mentioned the possibility of conducting talks in a trilateral format with Trump.
Potential venues for the meeting include Switzerland, Austria, and Turkey.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to target Russian infrastructure supporting the war effort with domestically produced long-range drones, including oil refineries, leading to record-high wholesale gasoline prices in Russia.
