China's Stance on US Tariffs

New Delhi: The Chinese government has expressed its strong disapproval of the United States' decision to impose tariffs as high as 50% on India, along with threats of further increases, according to Chinese envoy Xu Feihong during a recent event.

Feihong emphasized that such tariff and trade conflicts are causing significant disruptions to the global economic landscape.

His comments are particularly noteworthy given the recent warming of relations between China and India.

On Tuesday, both nations announced a series of initiatives aimed at fostering a "stable, cooperative, and forward-looking" partnership. These initiatives include efforts to maintain peace along their shared border, resume border trade, enhance investment opportunities, and restore direct flight services as soon as possible.

These developments come in the context of increasing tensions between India and the US, largely due to President Donald Trump's trade policies.

The measures were outlined in a joint statement following extensive discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, as well as a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his speech at the event held at the India International Centre, the Chinese envoy highlighted the tariffs imposed by the US on various countries.

"The United States has levied tariffs of up to 50% on India and has even threatened to escalate these measures. China is firmly against this," he stated.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China, Feihong expressed China's readiness to collaborate with all member states, including India, to ensure a summit characterized by friendship, solidarity, and productive outcomes.

"Together, we can embark on a new chapter of a dragon-elephant partnership," he concluded.
