Jaswinder Bhalla dies at 65: Eternal king of Punjabi comedy cinema who left behind remarkable legacy

New Delhi: Popular Punjabi actor and comedian, Jaswinder Bhalla, died at the age of 65 due to brain stroke at a private hospital in Mohali, Punjab on Friday (August 22) morning. He will be laid to rest on Saturday (August 23) at 12 pm at Balongi crematorium near Mohali.

Jaswinder Bhalla, the noted actor and comedian, stood at the heart of the Punjabi film industry with his satirical comedy and infectious humour that transcended generations. With over two decades of career in the film industry, his filmography is not just a collection of movies but a cultural journey that shaped the Punjabi cinema.

Jaswinder Bhalla legacy

It wasn’t lights, camera and action for Jaswinder Bhalla initially, but his first brush with fame came through Chhankata, which was a series of audio and video cassettes in the late 1980s and 1990s. His satirical sketches became so popular that it used to play in every household. It wasn’t just comedy, but comedy that mirrored social realities and hence, were relatable to his followers.

Chhankata opened doors for him in the mainstream Punjabi film industry and he made his acting debut in Dulla Bhatti (1998), followed by cult satire Mahaul Theek Hai (1999). In 2000s and 2010s, he became a synonym with comedy in the Punjabi cinema and often stole the show with his dialogue delivery and comic timings.

His most notable role was of Advocate Dhillon in Carry On Jatta franchise, which became a pop culture reference. Similarly, his other role as Inspector Joginder Singh Tiwana in Diljit Dosanjh starrer Jatt & Juliet was loved by audiences. His another roles as Subedar in Mr & Mrs 420 and Bhangra Coach in Ashke still remain memorable.

With over 70 films to his credit, some of his greatest hits include Mel Karade Rabba (2010), Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011), Sardaar Ji (2015), Vaisakhi List (2016), Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua (2018), Mar Gaye Oye Loko (2018), Carry On Jatta 3 (2023), Shinda Shinda No Papa (2024), and Fer Maamla Gadbad Hai (2024), among others.

Jaswinder’s work was not only confined in Punjabi cinema, but he also did stage tours including ‘Naughty Baba in Town’, across India, Canada, Australia, and UK, gaining fame globally.
