OpenAI announced on Friday that it will establish its first India office in New Delhi later this year, marking a significant expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets. India is currently the company’s second-largest user base for ChatGPT globally, after the United States.

The AI company has already registered its entity in India and begun hiring a local team. The New Delhi office will enable closer collaboration with the government, developers, enterprises, and academic institutions under the IndiaAI Mission. It will also help adapt tools and features specifically for Indian users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said India has all the ingredients to become a global leader in artificial intelligence, citing strong government support, a world-class developer ecosystem, and a vast talent pool. He noted that setting up a physical presence represents a crucial step in OpenAI’s commitment to “AI for India, with India.”

The Indian government welcomed the move. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said OpenAI’s decision underscores India’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. He added that the country is well-positioned to drive the next wave of AI transformation through the IndiaAI Mission.

OpenAI also shared new data showing India’s rapid adoption of its tools: the country ranks second globally for ChatGPT usage, weekly active users have quadrupled over the past year, and it leads in student adoption. India also ranks among the top five developer markets on OpenAI’s platform.

The announcement follows India-focused launches, including the ₹399-per-month ChatGPT Go subscription with UPI payments, and the expansion of OpenAI Academy in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and IT. The company’s GPT-5 model now supports Indic languages more effectively, and its new Study Mode feature has gained traction among Indian learners.

Looking ahead, OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by Developer Day later in the year, reinforcing its commitment to making advanced AI accessible and affordable across the country.
