Mumbai: During Mumbai’s recent spell of heavy rainfall, passengers faced another challenge besides waterlogged streets and paralysed traffic, which was app-based cab services sharply hiking fares, taking advantage of the citywide disruption. Journeys that normally cost around Rs 200 reportedly surged to Rs 600–800, adding financial strain to commuters already struggling to navigate flooded roads and halted local trains.

The Maharashtra government responded swiftly, with transport authorities ensuring that cab operators could not exploit the emergency situation. Inspections were carried out in coordination with the Mumbai Police over a two-day period, focusing on operators inflating fares or running services illegally through digital platforms. Out of 147 services examined, 36 were found to have overcharged passengers and were held accountable for violating fare regulations.

The police cyber cell also played a key role in investigating potential breaches of law by online cab operators.

The crackdown has been welcomed by city commuters, many of whom had expressed frustration at the sudden surge in fares during the flood-induced chaos. Authorities emphasised that monitoring of private transport services would continue during extreme weather, ensuring protection of consumer rights and preventing exploitation.

Monsoon chaos deepens transport woes in Mumbai

Notably, the city’s recent bout of heavy rainfall wreaked havoc across the city, leaving streets submerged, traffic paralysed, and commuters struggling to reach their destinations. The deluge, which also affected neighbouring districts, disrupted the daily rhythm of life as both roads and the city’s crucial local train network were brought to a near standstill. Flooded tracks forced multiple service suspensions and delays, leaving residents with limited transport options during the peak of the downpour.

Beyond fare concerns, the rainfall highlighted the broader vulnerabilities faced by Mumbai’s commuters. The episode illustrates how natural events can expose weaknesses in urban mobility systems and the critical need for regulatory oversight to maintain fairness and safety in emergency situations.
