Mumbai: During Mumbai’s recent spell of heavy rainfall, passengers faced another challenge besides waterlogged streets and paralysed traffic, which was app-based cab services sharply hiking fares, taking advantage of the citywide disruption. Journeys that normally cost around Rs 200 reportedly surged to Rs 600–800, adding financial strain to commuters already struggling to navigate flooded roads and halted local trains.
The Maharashtra government responded swiftly, with transport authorities ensuring that cab operators could not exploit the emergency situation. Inspections were carried out in coordination with the Mumbai Police over a two-day period, focusing on operators inflating fares or running services illegally through digital platforms. Out of 147 services examined, 36 were found to have overcharged passengers and were held accountable for violating fare regulations.
The police cyber cell also played a key role in investigating potential breaches of law by online cab operators.
