Devajit Saikia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, has commented on the talk that Shreyas Iyer might become the ODI captain. Reports came out on Thursday saying that Iyer, who wasn’t picked for the Asia Cup 2025 team, is the frontrunner to take over from Rohit Sharma as India’s next captain in the 50-over format. NDTV heard from a source that the BCCI wants to ease Rohit’s leadership duties since he’s getting to the end of his career.

But Saikia told Hindustan Times that he’s putting an end to all the talk, saying that the BCCI hasn’t talked about this at all. This is new to me. We haven’t had any conversations about it, Saikia said.

Iyer has been in the news since he wasn’t selected for the Asia Cup. Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, talked about why Shreyas wasn’t there when the team was announced. Earlier this week, he told reporters, It’s not Shreyas’ fault, and it’s not our fault either. We can only pick 15 people, and right now, he has to wait for his chance.

Iyer scored the most runs for India and was the second-highest overall in CT 2025, with 243 runs in five games, averaging 48.60, including two fifties and a top score of 79.

Iyer finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer in the recent IPL 2025. It was his best season, with 604 runs in 17 matches, averaging 50.33, a strike rate of 175.07, and six fifties. His highest score was 97*.

Since the last T20 World Cup win, the Mumbai batter has played 26 T20 matches and scored 949 runs, averaging 49.94, with a strike rate of 179.73, including a century and seven fifties. His best score is 130 not out.
