Mra -isl dispute: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) to sit together and find a solution within a week. There is a deadlock between AIFF and FSDL about the Master Rights Agreement (MRA). In this case, a special bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Joymalya Bagchi has fixed August 28 on the next hearing.

Indeed, the reason for the drawn between AIFF and FSDL is the Master Rights Agreement (MRA), this agreement is the administrative backbone of the Indian Super League (ISL), currently India’s top male football league. The current MRA ends in December 2025 and the ISL’s 2025-26 season has been postponed on 11 July due to failure of future MRA.
As a result, if there is no league, 11 out of 13 ISL clubs may suffer ‘destructive consequences’, and many clubs have temporarily suspended their operations. This decision of the Supreme Court is reversed by its earlier instructions given in April, in which it told the federation that until the Supreme Court does not take the decision on the AIF constitution, it should not interact with FSDL.
What is the whole matter
The main issue is the financial and operating model of ISL. The future of ISL hangs in the balance, which may threaten the upcoming 2025-26 season. This uncertainty affects clubs, players and hundreds of people working in the league. The AIFF wants a certain financial commitment from FSDL, while FSDL prioritizes a profit-sharing model, which AIFF considers very risky.

If FSDL refuses to work under the old contract, the situation will become even more difficult. The court cannot force AIFF to accept FSDL’s new proposal, nor can it compel FSDL to continue operating the league. If there is no agreement, the ISL season may be completely canceled. This will spoil the wider financial condition of the clubs, increase the chances of closure of clubs, and the development of Indian football will get a major setback.
