New Delhi: Shubman Gill is likely to miss the Duleep Trophy due to illness. He was named captain of the Indian Test team ahead of the England tour. The 25-year-old was the leading run-getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy scoring 754 runs at an average 75.40, including four centuries.

The Men in Blue won the last Test by six runs and levelled the five-match series at 2-2. For his sensational performance in the Test series, Gill was rewarded with vice-captaincy of the Asia Cup-bound T20I team by the BCCI selectors.

Gill was named captain of the North Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy earlier this month. But according to a Cricbuzz report, he will not participate in the upcoming Duleep Trophy due to illness and is currently resting at his home in Chandigarh.

The report further claimed that the ‘Physios recently examined him and submitted a health status report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).’

Gill’s unavailability news came just a few weeks before the Asia Cup 2025, but the sources also confirmed that he will feature in the Asia Cup 2025. However, the T20I vice-captain would not be available for the entire Duleep Trophy as the multinational tournament kicks off from September 9 and the Duleep Trophy will run until September 15.

Who will replace Shubman Gill as skipper in North Zone team?

Shubham Rohila will replace Gill in the Duleep Trophy squad as North Zone selectors already named his replacement during the team announcement. However, Rohilla will not lead the North Zone as Ankit Kumar, who was named as the vice-captain of the team, will lead the side in Gill’s absence.

Similarly, North Zone selectors also picked the replacement of Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh as they will also fly to the UAE for the Asia Cup 2025 after the first match. Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral were named as the replacements at the time of the squad announcement.

North Zone will take on East Zone in the opening match of the Duleep Trophy. Mohammed Shami, Mukesh Kumar, Riyan Parag, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Abhimanyu Easwaran are some well-known faces who will feature in the East Zone squad.
