Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Saturday (August 23) made it clear that the issue of Russian oil procurement by US President Donald Trump on India never came into the limelight before the new import duty imposed on India. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025, Jaishankar said, “We have not yet seen any US President who has run his foreign policy in such a public style. It is not only limited to India, but applied to the whole world.”

He added that Trump introduces domestic affairs as openly as globally and it is completely different from traditional diplomacy. Jaishankar said that Trump’s tariff is not only a business but also in non-business matters is a new trend. On Trump’s foreign policy, he said, “The first announcement is often publicly made, and later talks to the concerned party. It is a challenge before the whole world.”

The Foreign Minister said that three important challenges have arisen in front of India due to Trump’s policies. The first challenge is to trade, where the interests of farmers and small producers of India will be protected and they cannot be left at the cost of any agreement.

The second challenge is on the issue of oil purchase. According to Jaishankar, the way the US has targeted India, the same arguments have neither been applied to the largest oil importer like China nor on the European Union, which is the world’s largest LNG importer.

The third and most unusual challenge is that serious things to international relations are now declared on media and public forums and then discussed with countries concerned. This method is completely different from traditional diplomatic processes and has a new experience for the world.

President Trump has imposed a 50% import duty on India and has added an additional 25%, citing Russian oil purchases. Jaishankar, however, clarified that there was no formal discussion with India on the subject.
