New Delhi: Protests broke out late on Friday night at the Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre in Rohini Sector 27, north Delhi, after social media posts revealed the facility in a state of severe disrepair. Videos circulating online showed remains of dogs and animals reportedly being kept in distressing conditions, prompting activists and residents to demand an investigation.

The demonstration escalated as crowds attempted to enter the centre to inspect the treatment of strays brought in for sterilisation. Police intervened, and allegedly some activists were even manhandled and dragged in an attempt to manage the gathering, using lathis to control and disperse protesters. Several individuals were removed from the site, with at least one person taken into custody.

Allegations of poor hygiene, exposed organs among others

The protest continued into the early hours, with demonstrators claiming to have found unhygienic conditions, faecal contamination, exposed organs, and puppies housed alongside lethargic or unwell dogs, some reportedly near death. Allegations also included poorly maintained records and untagged animals.

The unrest followed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) acting on a Supreme Court directive issued on August 22, which instructed that stray dogs be captured, sterilised, vaccinated, and returned to their original locations, with only aggressive animals being retained. Neighbourhood feeding points were also to be established under the court’s orders.

Police denies any assault on protestors

However, the police denied any assault on protestors, stating that scuffles occurred only when some individuals tried to force entry and incite the crowd. A senior officer confirmed that some demonstrators were allowed inside the facility to verify conditions. While hygiene and care concerns were reportedly confirmed, authorities maintained that no dogs had been killed at the centre.
