Ranil wickremesinghe arrest: Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe has been arrested. He has been arrested on charges of misuse of government money. The news agency AFP quoted a senior police officer as saying that in September 2023, he went to London to attend a function held at a British University with his wife. It is alleged that Wickramasinghe spent government money in this visit. Ranil Wickramasinghe was arrested on Friday after a long interrogation of this visit.

Now Ranil Wickramasinghe will be presented before the Colombo Fort Magistrate. Along with this, they will be prosecuted to bring private use of government resources. Wickramasinghe has denied the use of government money for his wife’s visit to London. He has said that his wife raised her own expenses and did not use government money. Wickremesinghe has been seen as a leader who takes Sri Lanka out of the 2022 economic crisis. In such a situation, these allegations can harm their political image a lot.

Wickramasinghe was Prime Minister for the second time from 2001 to 2004.

Ranil has been the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka 6 times so far and has played the role of Leader of Opposition in Parliament twice. Ranil Wickramasinghe became the President of Sri Lanka in 2002 amidst the economic crisis and political upheaval. Ranil was the President of Sri Lanka till 2024.
