ETtech | August 24, 2025 10:20 PM CST

Synopsis

Meta Platforms is set to reveal Hypernova smart glasses with a display and a gesture-control wristband at its annual Connect conference. Priced around $800 and made in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the Hypernova glasses feature a small display and AI assistant interaction. The wristband uses sEMG sensor technology for gesture-based input, enhancing user control.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms plans to unveil two of its products, namely Hypernova smart glasses and a wristband for gesture control, during its upcoming annual Connect conference.

The virtual conference — scheduled for September 17 and 18 — marks the launch of the company’s first consumer-ready glasses with a display, according to a report by CNBC.

According to Counterpoint’s global smart glasses model shipments tracker, the AI smart glasses market is set to expand in late 2025 with new launches from Meta, Alibaba, and potentially Apple.

Meta Hypernova glasses

Hypernova glasses will include a small display in the right lens of the device, the CNBC report highlighted. The device is estimated to be priced around $800, sold in partnership with EssilorLuxottica.

Users can receive text, images, audio messages, phone calls, audio playback and artificial intelligence (AI) assistant interaction on the smart glasses. The glasses reportedly have a nearly 20-degree field of view and are expected to be slightly heavier as compared to other models.

Meta’s smart glasses push

Meta Platforms acquired a nearly 3% stake in eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica last month amid growing consumer interest in AI-powered wearable devices.

The social media giant also teamed up with Oakley to release AI-powered smart glasses in May, expanding its push into wearable tech after the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, millions of which have been sold since their launch in 2023.

Reports surfaced that global smart glasses shipments grew 110% year-over-year (YoY) in the first half of 2025, driven by strong demand for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Shipments of Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses grew over 200% YoY during the period, reflecting strong market demand and increased manufacturing capacity at Luxottica. The smart wearable drove Meta’s share of the global smart glasses market to 73%.

Oakley Meta glasses, targeting athletes and sports enthusiasts, had also received positive feedback with improved battery life and enhanced video-shooting quality.

Meta gesture-control wristband

The Hypernova glasses will also come paired with a wristband that will use technology built by Meta’s CTRL Labs, CNBC reported. Meta acquired CTRL Labs in 2019.

The gesture-control Wristband utilises surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor technology to read electrical signals from hand muscles. It enables gesture-based input instead of camera tracking used by the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Thus, the product specialises in building neural technology that could allow users to control computing devices using gestures in their arms.

Meta Connect Conference 2025

The Meta Connect conference showcases the company’s latest product offerings and outlines the company’s vision for artificial intelligence and the metaverse in a keynote address by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The event brings together developers to look at Meta’s latest technologies and build upon them.

In addition to Hypernova and the wristband, Meta will also announce a third generation of its voice-only smart glasses with Luxottica at Connect, the CNBC report stated.
