Until now, smartphones with satellite connectivity were limited to emergency features like SOS alerts or location sharing. Google has changed the game with the Pixel 10 series, which becomes the first phone to support WhatsApp audio and video calls over satellite. The feature will officially roll out on August 28the same day the Pixel 10 begins shipping.
Google revealed the development with a demo video on X (formerly Twitter), showing a WhatsApp call being placed while the satellite icon appeared in the status bar. This breakthrough means users can stay connected even in areas with no mobile network or Wi-Fia leap that makes satellite connectivity practical for everyday use.
Expanding the Pixel 10 Satellite Ecosystem
This announcement comes just days after Google expanded satellite features on the Pixel 10 lineup. Google Maps and Find My Hub recently gained live location sharing over satellitewhile Satellite SOS for emergencies also launched earlier this week. With WhatsApp calling, the Pixel 10 is no longer just about safety—it’s about mainstream communication powered by satellites.
A Clear Edge Over Apple and Samsung
The new feature gives Google a significant lead over competitors. Apple’s iPhones currently restrict satellite connectivity to SOS alerts onlywhile Samsung’s Galaxy S25 supports basic satellite messaging via Snapdragon Satellite. By enabling full-fledged WhatsApp calls, Google is moving several steps ahead in making satellite communications usable in daily life.
Caveats and Limitations
There are, however, some restrictions. Google confirmed that only select carriers will support WhatsApp satellite callingand users may incur additional charges for using this feature. It also remains uncertain if WhatsApp will extend satellite connectivity to text messaging in future updates.
Pixel Watch 4 Joins the Satellite Race
Alongside the Pixel 10, Google also introduced satellite SOS connectivity for emergencies on the Pixel Watch 4 LTE. Powered by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2the smartwatch can directly connect to geostationary satellites to summon help—marking the first time a wearable has gained direct satellite access.
With Pixel 10 and Pixel Watch 4, Google is redefining how we connect—whether in bustling cities or remote wilderness.
