Borderlands 4 might be tougher than expected, says Gearbox CEO

Borderlands 4 is almost here, but it sounds like the game could be more difficult than what fans are used to. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford admitted in an interview that he’s “a little nervous” about how players will handle the challenge.

Speaking at Gamescom 2025, Pitchford explained that not every Borderlands player wants the game to be brutally hard. Many fans love the series more for its humour, story, and wild world than for tough fights. But this time, the developers have added a sharper edge to some parts of the game. Boss battles in particular are said to be more complex and demanding than ever.

Still, there’s good news for players who don’t want the extra stress. Borderlands 4, like earlier games, will let fans grind levels to make things easier. If an enemy feels too tough, players can always go back, farm loot, gain more experience, and return stronger. Pitchford reassured fans that tough fights will eventually feel easy once your character grows more powerful. That classic Borderlands loop, getting stronger, finding better loot, and coming back to crush what once felt impossible, remains at the heart of the game.

This balance is important because Borderlands 3, despite being a commercial hit, left many fans divided. The gameplay was solid, but the writing and humour didn’t land the same way as earlier games. That puts extra pressure on Borderlands 4 to hit the right notes. Players want both fun and challenge, but Gearbox also has to make sure it doesn’t push too far in either direction.

On top of the difficulty talk, fans also recently learned that Borderlands 4 won’t have cross-save or cross-progression at launch. That means switching between platforms won’t be seamless for now, which is a bit disappointing for players who planned to enjoy the game across different devices.

With its September 12 release date approaching fast, there’s a sense that Borderlands 4 is shaping up to be bigger, tougher, and maybe riskier than past entries. Fans will soon find out whether the gamble pays off.
