Sausage rolls are a British cuisine favourite that's often present at picnics, parties and afternoon teas up and down the country. And it turns out, making this delicious baked treat at home can be really simple, too. This recipe for eight rolls comes together in just 15 minutes, with only 40 to 45 minutes of cooking in the oven.
Sharing it online, Tesco said: "With its light, flaky pastry and delicious meaty filling, homemade sausage rolls really are the best party food all year round. They're also perfect picnic fare, easy to transport and even easier to eat. You can double the quantities in this sausage roll recipe and freeze half the batch for impromptu guests or last-minute alfresco feasts."
How to make homemade sausage rollsIngredients
- One tbsp olive oil
- One small onion, finely chopped
- Six pork sausages, skins removed
- One tbsp English mustard
- Four rashers of streaky bacon, finely chopped
- One 320g sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry
- One egg, beaten
- One tbsp sesame seeds
- Ketchup, to serve (optional)
- Crushed chillies, to serve (optional)
Method
Heat some oil in a frying pan over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion for eight to 10 minutes, or until it becomes soft and translucent. Once done, move the onion to a large mixing bowl and allow it to cool.

Add the sausage meat, chopped bacon, and mustard to the cooled onions. Stir everything together until fully combined. Meanwhile, set your oven to preheat at gas mark six (200C, or 180C for fan ovens).
Roll out the sheet of pastry and slice it lengthwise to form two long rectangles. Divide the sausage mixture in half and shape each portion into a long, even line along one edge of each pastry strip.
Carefully roll the pastry around the filling, keeping the seam side down. Press along the seam to ensure it sticks securely. Brush the surface of the pastry with beaten egg and scatter sesame seeds on top. Slice each roll into four equal pieces.
Arrange the pieces on a baking tray with some space between them. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the pastry turns golden brown and crisp and the filling is thoroughly cooked. Serve it alongside a dip made of ketchup and crushed chillies.
