Sourav Ganguly, the one-time captain of the Indian cricket team, is now the head coach for the Pretoria Capitals. This news comes just before the start of the new SA20 League season. The team made the announcement on social media. In their Instagram post, they expressed their excitement, saying that Ganguly, known as The Prince, is ready to bring his special touch to the Capitals.

This position marks a first for Ganguly, as it’s his initial experience as a head coach for a professional cricket team. He takes over from Jonathan Trott, a former England cricketer. Previously, Ganguly served as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Pretoria Capitals thanked Trott for his leadership and commitment. They wished him well in his future endeavors, mentioning that he will always be a part of the Capitals family.

After stepping away from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly transitioned into administrative roles. Besides his time as BCCI President, he is presently the Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee and the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Ganguly’s past involvement in franchise cricket management includes his role as Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals in both the IPL and WPL, a position he secured after being named JSW Sports’ Director of Cricket last year. He also served as a mentor for DC in 2019 but left to become BCCI president. Following his term, he rejoined the franchise. His new job with the Pretoria Capitals is his first complete role as a head coach for a professional cricket team.

In another update, the 2026 SA20 season has been rescheduled to avoid overlapping with the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will host. The SA20 will now take place from December 26 to January 25.

Looking ahead, Ganguly’s immediate task as the head coach will be to choose the best players for the Pretoria Capitals during the player auction scheduled for September 9.
