Artificial Intelligence leader OpenAI has announced a major investment in the field of education in India. The company on Monday launched the 'India-First Learning Accelerator' and announced a research grant of Rs 4.5 crore to IIT-Madras and distribution of 5 lakh free ChatGPT licenses to government schools and AICTE-affiliated institutions across the country. Describing India as the 'lighthouse' of its global education strategy, OpenAI said that this program will be designed in collaboration with institutions and teachers to increase the scope and impact of AI-based learning.

Under this initiative, IIT-Madras will work with OpenAI to research how AI affects teaching methods, learning outcomes, and students' thinking ability. At the same time, free ChatGPT licenses for six months will help teachers in lesson planning, creating assignments, and better connecting with students. Students will be able to take advantage of features like 'study mode' and interactive quizzes.

Initiative to reduce the digital divide
The company has specifically emphasized that this initiative is to reduce the digital divide, not to increase it. ChatGPT also runs on ordinary smartphones, supports 11 Indian languages , and facilitates voice interaction. This is why there is a plan to implement it in government schools and low-cost technical institutes. IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti said that 'by partnering with OpenAI, we will be able to cross new boundaries in education and technology and prepare the coming generation better.'

Meanwhile, the license will be distributed through the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and ARISE (Alliance for Re-Imagining School Education). Along with this, training programs will also be started to increase AI literacy among teachers and students. OpenAI has recently increased its presence in India. An office has been opened in Delhi, ChatGPT Go has been launched with UPI payment, and the capability of GPT-5 has been strengthened in Indic languages. OpenAI's Education Head (Global), Lia Belsky said that 'This is completely an India-first initiative. We hope that the experiences gained here will show the whole world how AI can be used properly in education.'
