Promoting Self-Reliance in the Face of Tariffs

Just hours before the United States implemented new tariffs on India, the Indian government initiated a campaign to promote domestic products. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of a 'swadeshi' movement to counteract the tariffs imposed as a consequence of India's oil imports from Russia. With additional tariffs anticipated, this push for local goods aligns perfectly with the upcoming festive season. "Business owners should display a prominent sign indicating they offer 'swadeshi' products," Modi stated, highlighting the significance of the shopping season during various festivals. His remarks were made at an event in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as India takes a firmer stance against the US tariff policies impacting global trade.

Cultural Celebrations and Economic Resilience

During another gathering in Ahmedabad's Nikol area, Modi reassured attendees, stating, "My administration will ensure that small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock owners are protected." He further asserted, "Regardless of the pressure we face, we will continue to strengthen our resilience."

Response to International Economic Pressures

These comments followed a statement from US Vice President J. D. Vance, who mentioned on NBC News that President Donald Trump had exerted significant economic pressure on India, including additional tariffs, to hinder Russia's oil revenue and compel it to cease its military actions in Ukraine. Modi, while refraining from directly naming the US or its tariffs, remarked, "Today, the world is driven by politics of economic self-interest, where everyone focuses on their own benefit, and we can clearly see this happening now." From Ahmedabad, he pledged to prioritize the welfare of small business owners, shopkeepers, farmers, and livestock rearers, asserting, "No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it."
