A man working as a Deliveroo driver to help support himself got an unpleasant shock after delivering food to an old school friend, who had a deeply unpleasant reaction to his job. Working is a necessary means to an end - the world revolves around money and with the cost of living crisis raging on, finding viable sources of income is more important than ever for many people.

Unfortunately, finding a decent job or working in an industry you’re passionate about can be tricky to come by. One man, who has a degree in technology, struggled to find a job related to his qualifications so opted to work for Deliveroo to support himself.

When he arrived to drop food off at a former classmate’s home, he was hurt when he was laughed at and called a “loser”.

The Deliveroo driver’s friend was outraged on his behalf and took to Reddit to share his story under the question: “Do you look down on someone’s profession?”

The friend penned: “My friend works as a Deliveroo rider. Recently, he was dropping food to someone’s place and it turned out to be one of his old classmates from school. Instead of just greeting him, the guy started laughing, mocking him for being a rider, and even called him a loser.

“He’s in his late 20s now and has a career in marketing. My friend didn’t even get a chance to explain his situation because the guy slammed the door on him.

“The truth is, my friend actually has a tech degree but couldn’t break into the industry because of how competitive the market is. Right now, he’s doing Deliveroo to support himself.”

The friend added: “He felt really upset because he thought people like him would be more mature at this age.”

In the comments section, people shared their thoughts. One person said: “We probably all judge people silently. But part of the whole British thing is being secretive and discreet about it.”

Another confessed: “Cleaners, teachers, NHS and emergency services all deserve more respect.

“But I do look down on social media ‘influencers’, and all the grifters sat on their a** lying and trying to shill crap from TikTok shop. If that makes me a massive prick, then so be it."

Answering the Deliveroo driver’s question, another commented: “No, because at some stage I will retire and have no job. Anyone can also end up disabled or suffer a split and loose everything or just be down on luck.”

A fourth person shared: “Some of the most important jobs in the world are those that get looked down on.

“Take cleaners, bin collectors and roadsweepers for instance. They literally make sure we don’t live in a massive smelly trash-heap. How is that not respectable?”

Someone else commented: “That old classmate is just plain mean. Your friend is working incredibly hard to support himself until he gets a role in the tech industry.

“Regardless of whether someone is mopping floors or delivering food they are providing an essential service that quite frankly something we just can't be without in this day and age.

“Your friend is doing the best he can in his situation. The other person is a butthead.”

Another added: “Internally judging on someone for that kind of work = snobby prick. Actively laughing in someone's face about it = actual scum.”
