Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission, on Tuesday, announced that the 40-member sixth schedule Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will go to polls on September 22 and counting of votes will take place on September 26.

According to the notification, the last date for filing nominations is September 2. A total of 26,57,937 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, including 13,23,399 male voters, 13,34,521 female voters, and 17 categorised as “Others”.

Polling will be held across 3,359 stations, marking a 6.77% increase from the 3,146 stations in 2020. The Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in areas under the BTC ( now the Bodoland Territorial Region).

BJP is contesting the polls on its own and is expected to announce the list of candidates by August 30.

However, BJP is a partner in the council where regional party United Peoples’ Party-Liberal (UPPL) is leading the council. Another party which is in opposition in the council Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) is supporting the NDA government in Assam.

This election assumes significance as it is the last election before the next year’s assembly polls in Assam.

For the last 15 days, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is almost every day addressing public rallies in Bodoland. He has almost campaigned in 35 constituencies.

Sarma said, “The support for BJP is more than our expectations. The massive crowds at our meetings make it clear that people will vote for BJP in large numbers this time”.

In the 2020 polls BJP contested 24 seats and won nine seats. Refraining from any attack on UPPL and BPF, Sarma maintained that “I don’t consider UPPL or BPF as competitors. We are contesting to continue the peace the region has enjoyed in the past five years.”

The relationship between BPF and BJP turned bitter and both parties fought the 2020 council elections separately.

In 2006 and 2011, BPF was part of the Congress-led government in Assam. In 2014, before the Lok Sabha polls, the party parted ways with the Congress. In 2021 fought assembly polls in alliance with Congress. However later BPF started supporting NDA in the state assembly.

The 2020 election to the 40-member council had resulted in fractured mandate with BPF emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats. However, BJP and UPPL supported by Gana Suraksha Party (GSP)formed the government of council. Lone congress member left the party and joined BJP.

BJP won nine seats and UUPL emerged victorious from 12 seats. Later a BPF member left the party and joined BJP.
