New Delhi: Iga Swiatek got off to a winning start at the US Open 2025 with a comfortable straight-set victory over Emiliana Arango in the women’s singles first round on Tuesday. Swiatek made light work of her opponent, wrapping up the match 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour to progress into the second round of the tournament.
The Polish star, who is one of the favourites to win her second US Open title at Flushing Meadows this year, looked in fine form as she swept aside Arango in dominant fashion. Swiatek entered the tournament on a confident note, having won the Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open titles and would be hoping to go all the way at the US Open 2025.
Swiatek won the first set against Colombian Arango in just 27 minutes after securing a 3-1 lead with an early break. With Arango making unforced errors, Swiatek capitalised well and secured seven winners to give her opponent no chance of stringing a comeback in the opening set. After a double break, Swiatek sealed the set with a perfectly executed backhand.
In the second set, Swiatek had to deal with a spirited Arango, who fought back well to make it 3-2 at one stage. However, Swiatek’s experience and her composure under pressure helped the Polish start secure a victory in straight sets to seal her spot in the second round of the tournament.
