Safety Advisory from Himachal Pradesh Police

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Police have taken to social media to issue a crucial advisory regarding unsafe travel habits, specifically targeting the trend of passengers leaning out of car sunroofs while navigating the picturesque hills of the state.
The post gained rapid popularity, featuring a humorous yet serious message: “If you come out of the sunroof… the picture may go viral, but it will come with a challan.” Accompanying this warning was an image depicting a tourist precariously perched outside a car’s sunroof on a winding mountain road.
Officials from the police department emphasized that such antics, often done for social media content, pose significant risks to both the individuals involved and other drivers on the mountainous roads. Unexpected vehicle movements, sharp turns, or falling debris can easily lead to accidents.
“Tourists frequently overlook that our hill roads are not movie sets. While a viral photo might garner online attention, it could cost someone their life. This issue transcends mere fines; it’s fundamentally about safety,” stated a police representative.
Himachal Pradesh, a favored tourist spot in northern India, has witnessed a rise in road accidents in recent years, primarily due to negligence, speeding, and unsafe travel practices. With an influx of tourists expected this monsoon season, the police have initiated awareness campaigns that cleverly mix humor with serious safety messages.
This latest advisory builds on previous efforts where the police warned against drunk driving, speeding, and reckless overtaking on mountain roads. The creative campaign has been widely shared online, with many praising the department for its innovative approach to public safety.
The authorities have reiterated that fines (challans) will be enforced on those who violate traffic regulations as per the Motor Vehicles Act, with patrol teams actively monitoring highways and popular tourist routes.
As the festive season approaches, the Himachal Pradesh Police are urging travelers to appreciate the scenic beauty of the hills responsibly, ensuring their journeys are memorable for all the right reasons—without endangering lives or violating laws.
