Incident Overview

In Aryanad, located in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, a 48-year-old woman member of the local panchayat was discovered deceased on Tuesday. Shriya S., a member of the Kottakkam ward and a local Congress worker, was found lifeless in a shed near her residence.

Circumstances Surrounding the Death

Authorities suspect that her death may have resulted from the ingestion of a corrosive substance. She was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical staff. A police spokesperson indicated, "At first glance, this appears to be a case of suicide. The investigation is ongoing. According to her husband, she was facing some financial difficulties."

Political Reactions

VD Satheesan, the leader of the opposition in the Kerala Assembly, has claimed that Shriya took her own life due to humiliation inflicted upon her during a public meeting organized by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) concerning financial issues.

Local Congress leaders have echoed these sentiments, asserting that the campaign by the LDF targeting her financial troubles led to her tragic decision. They also staged protests at the panchayat in response to the incident.

Public Humiliation Allegations

Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode, they stated that the ward member was publicly humiliated during a meeting led by the regional secretary of the Marxist party.
