
New Delhi. The Indian Navy has been constantly strengthening its strength. In this episode on Tuesday, two modern indigenous Nilgiri-Class Stealth Guided Missile Frigates (INS Udayagiri and INS Himgiri) in Visakhapatnam (INS Udayagiri and INS Himgiri). Himgiri commissioned. This is the first time that 2 major surface warships built in different Indian shipyards have been included in the Navy fleet on the same day and place. Both these warships have been constructed under Project 17A (P-17A), the next variant of the Shivalik Class (Project 17).

INS Udayagiri was built by Mumbai -based Majgon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, while INS Himgiri has been prepared by Kolkata -based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers. About 75% indigenous materials have been used in both ships, which is considered a major step towards self -sufficient India. Each frigate weighs around 6,700 tonnes and has state -of -the -art weapons and sensors. These include many modern techniques including 8 BrahMos supersonic missiles, Barak-8 long-range surface-to-air missile systems. These have a combined diesel/gas propulsion system which gives them high speed and better operating capacity.
Navy’s strength will be stronger
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the ceremony. He said that the commission of these ships will increase the strength of the Indian Navy and the security of the country’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean region will be strengthened. Both frigates will now give a new dimension to India’s maritime security system by becoming part of the eastern fleet. This achievement is considered a symbol of self -reliance and technical updates in India’s defense sector, which has agreed to show its strategic capability globally.
