Shubman Gill is unlikely to lead the North Zone team in 2025 Duleep Trophy starting tomorrow at Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence. Gill is unwell and will miss the tournament opener.
A report from Cricbuzz said that sources close to Shubman Gill have said that confirmation of missing the first match of the tournament has come from his side. The report says,
“The North Zone selection committee has been anticipating the possibility of Gill’s unavailability for the inter-zonal competition, scheduled to begin on August 28 at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, for the last few days. However, as of Friday (August 22), they had not received any official communication from the North Zone associations."

Ankit Kumar to lead North Zone
Earlier, Shubman Gill was named as the captain of the squad. The 27-year-old Haryana prodigy Ankit Kumar was assigned as Gill's deputy. However, with Gill missing, Kumar will be promoted to the captain's spot. The Cricbuzz report further added,
"The North Zone selectors had already made an arrangement of a replacement in the event of Gill missing the competition. Shubham Rohilla was named as a replacement for Gill at the time of announcing the squad. Ankit Kumar was named vice-captain of the North Zone side, which means he will now lead the zone in the Duleep Trophy."
Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana to depart half-way
The North-zone fast bowlers Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh has been selected in the 2025 Asia Cup. And thus they have to leave the team mid-season.
However, the pace-duo will be fully available in the first round of the six-team. In case the North Zone qualifies for the semis, Arshdeep and Harshit will be leaving for their national duties. For that, Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral have been added as replacements for the two pacers for the leftover schedule.
