Statewide Road Safety Initiative
In accordance with directives from the Yogi Government, Uttar Pradesh is set to implement a statewide road safety initiative titled 'No Helmet, No Fuel' from September 1 to 30. This campaign will be spearheaded by district magistrates in collaboration with local road safety committees. Officials from various sectors, including police, transport, revenue, and district administration, will work together to ensure compliance with helmet regulations as mandated by the Motor Vehicles Act.
Under this initiative, individuals not wearing helmets will be denied fuel at petrol stations, aiming to enhance road safety rather than impose fines. The Yogi Government has urged the public to fully cooperate with enforcement agencies.
This initiative is grounded in legality and serves the public interest. According to Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, wearing helmets is compulsory for both riders and pillion passengers, while Section 194D outlines penalties for non-compliance. The Supreme Court's road safety committee has also recommended that states prioritize helmet usage.
The UP Government emphasizes that the 'No Helmet, No Fuel' campaign is intended to promote safe practices rather than punish individuals. Fuel will only be dispensed to those wearing helmets. The Uttar Pradesh Transport Commissioner has stated that this campaign is entirely for the public good. The Department of Food and Civil Supplies has been tasked with ensuring effective coordination and monitoring at petrol stations.
Furthermore, the Information and Public Relations department will play a role in raising awareness among the public. Collaboration among citizens, industry, and administration is crucial to achieving the national objective of reducing fatalities and serious injuries from road accidents. 'No Helmet, No Fuel' is framed not as a punishment but as a commitment to safety. This campaign will run from September 1 to 30, involving multiple government departments under the guidance of district magistrates. All citizens, petrol station operators, and oil companies are encouraged to support this initiative. 'Make wearing a helmet a priority before refueling, as it is the simplest way to safeguard lives,' stated Brajesh Narayan Singh, Transport Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh.
