Man Utd make decision on Chido Obi transfer after Grimsby cup snub

Manchester United have made a decision on where Chido Obi will play his football this season after his first-team breakthrough last term, according to reports. The 17-year-old striker became a regular fixture in Ruben Amorim's senior matchday squads due to injury woes and a lack of goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Obi was also involved in United's post-season trip to Asia, scoring twice against Hong Kong, and travelled on the pre-season tour of the United States. But the Red Devils' attack-focused summer transfer business raised questions about the former Arsenal academy starlet's role.

Benjamin Sesko arrived in a £74million transfer after Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who can also play down the middle, completed £62.5m and £71m switches, respectively.

Hojlund is on the verge of a season-long loan move to Napoli, but Amorim's attack is well-stocked without the misfiring Dane.

As a result, there have been suggestions that Obi could pursue a temporary exit of his own to build up his senior minutes this season.

However, Danish outlet Tipsbladet report that United have no plans to send the teenager out on loan and want him to remain in the club's ranks.

It's claimed that Denmark's Under-21 manager, Lars Knudsen, was keen for Obi to head out on loan for regular football this season.

But he appears set to spend the majority of the current campaign as part of United's Under-21 side, rather than in the first team.

Obi has featured twice for the U21s so far this term, first making a 30-minute appearance off the bench in a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough.

He then started the 4-2 win against Norwich U21s and found the net, his 15th goal in 16 outings for United's youth teams.

There is no European football on offer at Old Trafford this season after United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Obi was also absent from Amorim's squad for Wednesday's Carabao Cup second-round trip to Grimsby Town.

Sesko started the match alongside Cunha, while Mbeumo and Zirzkee were alternative striker options among the substitutes.

United will re-evaluate Obi's development plan next year, after he turns 18, when a loan switch could become more likely.
