In many Indian households, applying hair oil before bedtime has long been seen as a simple way to relax. Now, experts suggest the practice may also play a role in improving sleep quality.
Dr Vaishali Gode, EVP – R&D, Product Development (Nourishment) and Packaging, Marico Limited, and Hair Expert, Parachute Advansed, explains that the method is supported by science. “Massaging the scalp with coconut-based hair oil is not only beneficial for hair health, but also has a calming effect on the mind. The slow, rhythmic motions help ease stress and signal the body to relax, which can improve sleep quality ,” she says.
Research indicates that scalp massages can reduce stress, improve blood circulation, and enhance oxygen flow to the hair follicles. According to Dr Gode, these factors can help create the conditions necessary for deeper rest. “Scalp massages are known to reduce stress levels, improve microcirculation and increase oxygen flow to the follicles. These factors contribute to both healthier hair and a more restful state of mind,” she notes.
She adds that the choice of oil is also important. “A lightweight, non-sticky coconut-based hair oil is effective as it nourishes the scalp while allowing for a comfortable massage experience,” Dr Gode explains.
As more people look for natural methods to manage stress and sleep better, hair oiling and scalp massage remain accessible, affordable practices rooted in everyday tradition.
