New Delhi: The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) unveiled the Virender Sehwag Gate at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) to honor the legendary cricketer earlier in October 2017. Sehwag who is widely regarded for revolutionizing the role of a Test opener scored two triple-centuries in the format with exceptional hand-eye coordination contributions to two World Cup victories and a reputation as one of India’s finest match-winners. Seven years later in the second season of Delhi Premier League (DPL) his older son Aaryavir made a striking debut at the same stadium. Yash Dhull the Central Delhi Kings regular opener had to be replaced as he left the league to play for the North Zone in the 2025 Duleep Trophy. With the team performing strongly this season they needed a top-order batsman to maintain their momentum. The management turned to Aaryavir planning his debut against the East Delhi Riders. Aaryavirs batting evoked memories of his renowned father When Aaryavir and his wicketkeeper-batter partner Kaushal Suman walked out to start the innings on Wednesday night the spotlight was on him. Some of his strokes evoked memories of his renowned father. Even though Aaryavir scored 22 off 16 his confidence was clear. His early contributions enabled Central Delhi to reach 155/6 in 20 overs which was ultimately sufficient to defeat East Delhi. While speaking at the press conference after the game Aaryavir disclosed the moment he learned about his DPL debut. After the last game [I got to know that I will play the next one] said Aaryavir responding to a CNN-News18 CricketNext query. I took that catch in the previous match. After the game ended Jonty [Sidhu] bhaiyya told me that I would play the next match he added. Aaryavir smashed Navdeep Saini consecutive boundaries The 17-year-old began cautiously but quickly accelerated as he targeted Navdeep Saini who had played 11 T20Is for consecutive boundaries. He first lofted a shot over cover then stepped out created space and drove the next through extra cover. Scoring 12 runs off the over which also shocked Saini right at the start of the match. Aaryavir said he felt confident after hitting those two boundaries that he gave another East Delhi bowler Raunak Waghela the same treatment back-to-back boundaries. It felt good. The first two boundaries gave me confidence and helped me settle in. But the innings wasn’t that long. I will try to stay longer in the middle next time he said about his debut knock. Aaryavir also had a chat with his father Ahead of the playoffs Aaryavir consulted his father a master of power-hitting across formats for guidance. The young batsman frequently seeks his father’s advice. Absolutely. Jab father sahab bolenge to sunna to padega hi (I have to listen to my father) Aaryavir chuckled. Numerous scouts from various IPL teams have been at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as the DPL 2025 is on the verge of conclusion. However Aaryavir said that he doesn’t let it distract him especially during matches. We are aware that we are being monitored. The scouts have their eyes on us. But we don’t think about it too much especially when we are on the field. We just focus on the game he added. The Central Delhi Kings have secured a spot in the DPL 2025 playoffs. With important matches ahead all eyes will be on the young player.
