The Cleveland Browns have found themselves in the middle of drama this week, and it has nothing to do with their starting quarterback Joe Flacco. Instead, all eyes are on rookie Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round pick who has not been given a backup role and is sitting behind both Flacco and Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart.
Some fans believe the Browns are holding Sanders back on purpose. The team strongly denies that, but the noise hasn’t gone away. Sanders didn’t help his case with a rough outing in the final preseason game, where he struggled without first or second-team reps. But his debut against the Panthers showed promise, as he completed 17 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns without a single interception.
Adding fuel to the fire, Travis Kelce spoke about the situation on his podcast “The Heights.” Fresh off his engagement, the Chiefs star said he thinks the Browns should let Sanders play. He pointed out that fans are excited about him, that he brings attention and energy, and that people would tune in just to watch him. Kelce made it clear he wasn’t disrespecting Flacco or Gabriel, but he believes Sanders could be great for the game.
The truth, though, is that this isn’t about hype or headlines. Sanders was drafted in the fifth round for a reason, while Gabriel went earlier, and Flacco was already chosen as the starter. The Browns are focused on putting the team in the best position to win games, not building a show around one player. If Sanders proves in practice and future opportunities that he’s ready, he’ll get his shot. Until then, the team is sticking with experience and depth over excitement.
