First Man Utd star makes feelings clear on Ruben Amorim after Grimsby Town humiliation

Diogo Dalot has insisted Manchester United's humiliating defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup is the responsibility of the players and not manager Ruben Amorim. United were knocked out of the tournament by the League Two side on penalties.

Late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire sent the tie to a shootout, but missed spot kicks from Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha saw United crash out in the second round. Amorim was furious with his team's performance and took aim at his players after the game.

"I just want to say sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore about the performance," Amorim said. "When everything is so important in our club and you try to do everything.

"You have come from pre-season, even Arsenal you lose the game but you are there, you are improving and you see the performance, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important in our club.

"And when you start a game like this… I think my players are talking really loud about what they want, so I'm really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore."

Dalot was the only player to face the media after the defeat and he defended Amorim when asked about the manager's future. "It's our responsibility. We are the ones on the pitch," he told ITV.

"We have to fight back. I think the message is really clear, tomorrow is a new day and we need to fight back and show to ourselves that to be at this club you need to do much more. Today was not good enough, that was clear. "

In a separate interview with MUTV, Dalot added: "We gave the game to them. We gave them exactly what they wanted: winning duels, second balls, set plays.

"We fought back, but I think that is the minimum we could show to the fans that travelled today for ourselves and for the club. It was clearly not good enough.

"We cannot come here and expect that it is going to be easy because this competition, this club... they fought really hard to deserve to go through. But it shouldn't be enough to win against us because we should have shown much more."
