Gmail cyber crime: Cyber criminals are constantly targeting people by searching for new methods in the digital age. Recently, hackers have adopted a new tactic to cheat Gmail users. They are stealing and cheating users’ data by sending fake sign-in alert emails.
Fraud under the guise of Google alert
According to Google, now almost all users are sent sign-in alerts on their behalf. Taking advantage of this, hackers are sending emails that look exactly like real. These include Google’s logo, formatting and ‘threat to safety’ messages. These emails often have a link or button, such as Check Activity or Secure Your Account. But this link takes directly to a fake login page, where the password inserted by the user is immediately stolen.
Why changing password is necessary
According to the report, around 2.5 billion Gmail users are active worldwide. Of these, only 36% of users regularly update their password. Cyber security experts believe that changing the password from time to time is the easiest way to avoid such risks.
Other methods of fraudsters
Hackers are not only limited to fake alert emails, but they adopt many other ways
- Fake notification: Stealing data by sending a fake link to Viselle or notice in email.
- Fraud as support: Getting personal information on email or call by calling yourself a Google staff.
Through these techniques, cyber criminals steal personal and financial data of users.
Google’s warning and safety measures
Google has appealed to its users to be careful with fake alert emails. Also advised to adopt some basic security steps
- Do not click on that link directly when suspected email arrives.
- Open the new tab in the browser and go to myaccount.google.com.
- Click on the Security tab and check the Recent Security Events panel.
- Look at the unknown device or location in recent activities.
If you see any suspicious activity, immediately click on Secure Your Account and reset the password.
Note
The scope of online fraud is increasing continuously. In such a situation, awareness and vigilance is the biggest weapon for users. Periodically changing the password, avoiding suspicious emails and going directly to Google account settings is the right way to avoid cheating.
