Ravichandran Ashwin retires from the IPL with 187 wickets, now eyeing overseas leagues like MLC, The Hundred, and ILT20 with a possible player-cum-coach role.
Ravichandran Ashwin has officially retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), just months after calling time on his international career. The veteran spinner, who stepped away from international cricket in December last year, announced his decision on August 27, bringing an end to his IPL journey.
At 38, Ashwin has closed the chapter on India’s premier T20 league but made it clear he remains open to featuring in overseas T20 tournaments, keeping the door ajar for fans to see him in action on foreign soil.
Ashwin’s future in overseas leagues may not be restricted to playing alone. As reported by Cricbuzz, the veteran spinner is considering a player-cum-coach role. With his wealth of experience in the shortest format, Ashwin is now looking to broaden his horizons and seize opportunities that would allow him to contribute both on and off the field in foreign T20 competitions.
Ashwin Eyes Overseas Leagues After IPL Retirement
Ravichandran Ashwin has set his sights on overseas T20 leagues after bidding farewell to the Indian Premier League. According to reports, the veteran spinner is targeting Major League Cricket (MLC), The Hundredand ILT20 as possible destinations.
Ashwin could have also featured in the SA20, but with franchises already finalizing their squads ahead of the September 9 auction, that window appears closed for now.
The 38-year-old officially announced his IPL retirement through a heartfelt social media post, where he also expressed his desire to continue playing abroad. Reflecting on his 16-year IPL journey, Ashwin recalled the memories, bonds, and experiences that shaped his career in India’s biggest T20 league.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin wrote on his social media handle.
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” he added.
Ravichandran Ashwin ended his illustrious IPL journey as the league’s fifth-highest wicket-taker, finishing with 187 scalps in 221 matches. Over the course of his 16-year career, the veteran off-spinner turned out for five different franchises, but it was with the Chennai Super Kings that he enjoyed his longest and most successful stint.
Spending eight seasons with CSK, Ashwin played a key role in their back-to-back title triumphs in 2010 and 2011, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s most dependable match-winners.
