Arsenal have ideal Champions League advantage after learning draw

Arsenal learned which four teams they will face away from home in the much-anticipated UEFA Champions League draw on Thursday, revealing where the Gunners and their fans will be travelling this season.

Last season, Arsenal made it to the semi-finals, only to be knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. During the run, fans were treated to exciting trips to Madrid, Eindhoven, Lisbon, and Girona.

However, a new campaign brings fresh and familiar destinations. The potential for fatigue from longer journeys is also a concern.

With teams from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in the mix, there was a chance for some lengthy travels, but thanks to the draw conducted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kaka for UEFA, Arsenal were spared these long hauls.

Instead, they were drawn away to Inter Milan from pot one. The Gunners suffered defeat at the hands of the Italian side last season under controversial circumstances, with Mikel Merino arguably deserving a penalty.

The journey from London Gatwick to Milan's Malpensa airport is approximately 559 miles, making it the second-longest trip that Arteta's team will undertake during this league phase.

From pot two, Arsenal drew Club Brugge. Given the high-ranking teams in this pot, the Belgian side is likely one that Arteta and the club would have hoped for, despite their reputation as giant-killers from previous seasons.

A flight from Gatwick to Brugge is a mere 140 miles. Alternatively, by Eurostar and a connecting train, which is another option for supporters, the journey would be 292 miles.

From pot three, the Gunners are set to face a former Europa League adversary in Slavia Prague.

After a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium in 2021, Arteta's side secured a 4-0 victory in the Czech capital, propelling them into the semi-finals.

This journey, from Gatwick to Prague, is by far the longest, covering approximately 640 miles.

The schedule for the games will be announced on Saturday, but Arsenal will be hoping that the fixtures surrounding this match are not too far from north London.

Finally, pot four presents a delightful trip to the Basque Country to take on Athletic Club, whom the Gunners convincingly defeated 3-0 in a pre-season friendly at the Emirates Stadium.

A flight from Gatwick to Bilbao is similar in distance to that of Milan, falling just a few miles short at roughly 557 miles.

In total, this means that the Gunners will cover 1896 miles flying out, but with return trips, this equates to approximately 3792 miles.

For comparison, the club covered 5571 flight miles last season, so they have less to travel this time around, a reduction of 1779 miles.
