Taco Bell is bringing back five beloved menu items from the late 90s and early 2000s, starting September 9. The returning favorites include the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, Caramel Apple Empanada, 7-Layer Burrito, Double Decker Taco, and Chili Cheese Burrito, all priced at $3 or less. Apart from this, rewards members can win exclusive Y2K themed items like hats, vintage style shirts and digital watches every Tuesday.

Taco Bell is reviving five fan-favourite items from the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a limited Decades Y2K Menu. The company said the food items would arrive in restaurants nationwide beginning September 9.

The fast food giant announced Thursday the five returning menu items include Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, Caramel Apple Empanada, 7-Layer Burrito, Double Decker Taco and Chili Cheese Burrito, the company said in a news release.

Taco Bell’s Decades Y2K Menu reintroduces the most-hyped items from the golden age of Y2K innovation, all for $3 or less, the company added.

What are the items returning?

Fan-favorites like the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, 7-Layer Burrito, Chili Cheese Burrito, and Double Decker Taco are making their long-awaited return for a limited time. “No one did the 2000s like Taco Bell. That era gave us some of our most iconic menu items, including the Crunchwrap Supreme, which remains one of our best-sellers two decades later,” said Taylor Montgomery, Chief Marketing Officer. “Fans have never stopped asking for these items, and honestly, we’ve missed them too.”

Along with the menu items, rewards members can win exclusive Y2K themed items like hats, vintage style shirts and digital watches every Tuesday from September 2 through September 16. "In partnership with throwback heavyweight Ed Hardy, Rewards Members will have a chance to cop a one-of-a-kind collab hat, plus exclusive Y2K merch including a Y2K digital watch and vintage-style shirts – available first come first serve through weekly Tuesday Drops, September 2 through September 16," Taco Bell said in the news release.

There's also a digital pet, the Crunchkin, rewards members can care for and earn a chance to win a limited-edition Taco Bell Y2K Merch Capsule.

Taco Bell new menu items

Being welcomed back are fan favorites and "certified legends, backed by cult followings, online rabbit holes, and fan petitions that refused to let them go," according to Taco Bell. You can taste the early 2000s again starting Sept. 9.

Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos: A sequel to the original Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos, a regular taco shell is instead replaced with a Cool Ranch Doritos flavored shell and stuffed with beef, cheese and lettuce. A taco will cost $2.49 for a limited time at participating locations. This version of Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Tacos stopped being served in 2019 six years after its debut on the menu.

Double Decker Taco: This item, first introduced to the menu in the 90s, has come and gone over the years. The original taco, filled with beef, cheese and lettuce, is cradled by a refried bean filled soft tortilla. A taco will cost $2.49 for a limited time at participating locations. The layered taco debuted in 1995 and was originally a limited-edition menu item. The popularity of it got it a permanent spot on the menu from 2006 until 2019, according to the Taco Bell Wiki. It also made a return to the menu briefly in 2023.

7-Layer Burrito: Vegetarians aren't excluded from the nostalgia. The 7-layer burrito consists of a flour tortilla filled with refried beans, seasoned rice, reduced-fat sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. The burrito will cost $2.49 for a limited time at participating locations. The packed burrito was introduced in 1993 for just 99 cents. It was taken off the menu in 2020 during the COVID pandemic.

Chili Cheese Burrito: Taco Bell described the chili cheese burrito as a "cult favorite and most passionately pursued menu item" that has even sparked the Chili Cheese Burrito Tracker to hunt down locations that still serve it. The burrito features beefy chili mixed with cheese in a tortilla. It will cost $2.99 for a limited time at participating locations.

It was introduced in 1990 and was never fully discontinued, since it was left up to franchise owners and popularity to keep or remove the item from the menu, according to the Taco Bell Wiki.

Caramel Apple Empanada: It's exactly what it sounds like: an apple and caramel filled empanada. It can be yours again for $2.99 for a limited time at participating locations. It made its return recently as Taco Bell brought out their "decades" menu items. This sweet empanada represented the 2000s.
