Rishi Kapoor, one of the most beloved stars of Hindi cinema, worked in the industry for nearly five decades before his passing five years ago. Known for his charm and versatility, he shared the screen with many legends but his dynamic with Amitabh Bachchan always drew attention. Despite being ten years younger, Rishi Kapoor would often address Amitabh by name, and though there was an undercurrent of tension between them during their peak years, Rishi never held back in praising Big B’s contribution to cinema.
In his autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, Rishi described Amitabh Bachchan as a “great actor” who revolutionized Bollywood in the 1970s. He credited him with changing the trend of Hindi films, writing that “action started with him” and that his arrival rendered many other actors irrelevant during that era. This candid admission highlighted Rishi’s admiration for Amitabh’s unmatched screen presence and influence.
Though their relationship was not particularly close in the early years, the two actors eventually shared cordial ties and collaborated on several iconic films such as Kabhi Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Coolie, Naseeb, Ajooba and later, 102 Not Out. Each time they appeared together, their on-screen chemistry was loved by audiences, cementing their status as two of Bollywood’s finest performers.
