Rising Traffic Violations and Road Safety Measures

Over-speeding and disregard for traffic regulations are leading causes of road accidents. A recent report from traffic authorities highlights intensified inspections and strict actions against reckless drivers. From January to July this year, a staggering 173,143 individuals were fined for violating traffic rules on national highways, resulting in a total penalty of ₹26.27 crore. The majority of these fines were issued for over-speeding, alongside penalties for not wearing seat belts and improper overtaking, contributing to the increasing number of road accidents.

To combat road accidents, especially on national highways, various initiatives are being implemented. According to ADG (Traffic) Sudhanshu Kumar, the goal is to reduce road accidents by 50% by 2030. Significant reforms have already been initiated, including the deployment of modern patrolling vehicles across over 3,000 km of national highways. These vehicles are equipped to monitor the speed of vehicles and enforce traffic regulations, aiming to decrease accidents on these roads.

ADG Sudhanshu Kumar also mentioned that these patrolling vehicles will be equipped with GPS technology to track their locations. This will ensure that vehicles do not stray beyond their designated areas, and if necessary, commands can be sent from the command and control center in Patna to halt any vehicle. An additional 58 highway patrolling vehicles are set to join the fleet soon, enhancing the efficiency of monitoring traffic across national highways. Each vehicle will have a specified distance to cover, ensuring compliance and increasing enforcement against traffic violations.
