Can drinking beetroot juice drop your blood pressure?

A new study has found that beetroot juice, which is naturally rich in nitrates, can help older adults lower their blood pressure by changing the bacteria in their mouths.
Surprisingly, the researchers also discovered that using antiseptic mouthwash regularly might interfere with some of these benefits.
WHY THE MOUTH MATTERS FOR THE HEART
When we eat nitrate-rich foods like beetroot, spinach, or lettuce, the bacteria in our mouth convert those nitrates into nitric oxide - a compound that helps relax blood vessels and improve blood flow.
This study, published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, shows that our oral microbiome (the community of bacteria in our mouth) can influence how well nitrate-rich diets benefit our heart health.
The trial involved 39 young adults (18-30 years old) and 36 older adults (67-79 years old). Participants went through three different two-week phases:
- Drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice.
- Drinking a placebo beetroot juice (with almost no nitrate).
- Using antiseptic mouthwash twice a day.
