Do you also stay awake till late at night and feel tired when you wake up in the morning, as if you have not slept well? The reason for this may be your WiFi router. That small device kept in your room, which remains on continuously since its installation and spreads the signal throughout the house, can disturb your sleep. Many studies have revealed that electromagnetic radiation emitted from WiFi can affect sleep patterns. In such a situation, a big question arises—should WiFi be turned off while sleeping? Let's know in detail.
What does the research say?
In 2024, RMIT University conducted research. In this, the participants were made to sleep near the WiFi router for a week continuously. The results were shocking—about 27% of the people showed symptoms like insomnia. Also, their brain activity was found to be more than normal, which is harmful for deep sleep. Earlier in 2021, an experiment on rats found that due to the 2.4 GHz WiFi signal, the rats remained awake for a longer time, and their deep sleep period decreased. However, the WHO (World Health Organization) and ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) say that the radiation of WiFi is very weak and it cannot have any serious effect on human health. That is, the opinion of experts is still divided.
Real concern: Radiation or fear of the mind?
Experts believe that even though the direct effect of WiFi radiation is not visible on every person, it definitely has an effect on the mental level. This is called the nocebo effect. This means that even if there is no direct harmful effect on the body, if the person is afraid that WiFi is disturbing their sleep, then this worry can disrupt their sleep again and again.
Benefits of turning off WiFi
If you are troubled by sleep problems, then turning off WiFi at night can be an easy and effective solution. This gives peace of mind and can improve the quality of sleep. Not only does sleeping off the router at night save electricity and internet data. Not only this, but turning off the router from time to time instead of keeping it on continuously also increases its life.
When can turning off WiFi be harmful?
If you have smart devices in your home—like smart cameras, smart lights, or other automation-related devices—then turning off WiFi can cause problems. All these devices depend on the internet 24/7. In such a situation, the automation work will not be completed on time. If you want your room not to be affected by WiFi while sleeping, then it would be better to keep the router in some other part of the house. This will keep receiving signals, but their effect on your sleeping place will be less.
There is still no consensus among experts about the effect of WiFi on sleep. But it is certain that radiation is present at a low level and its psychological effect can disturb the sleep of many people. In such a situation, turning off WiFi at night can give you mental peace and help you get a peaceful sleep.
