OpenAI, the US company that makes ChatGPT, is rapidly strengthening its presence in India. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is planning to build a data center with at least 1 GW capacity in collaboration with local partners. However, its location and timeline have not been decided yet.
Registration and local team in India
In collaboration with Microsoft, OpenAI has registered itself as a legal entity in India and has started building a local team. In August, the company announced that it would soon open its first office in New Delhi. India is OpenAI's second-largest user market after the US.
Part of the Stargate infrastructure
This data center can be an important part of OpenAI's Stargate project. This is a private sector AI infrastructure initiative, which was launched by US President Donald Trump in January. The project includes SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, and an investment of about $ 500 billion is proposed.
OpenAI has recently taken a big step, keeping in mind the education sector in India. The company has announced that it will provide free ChatGPT licenses to 5 lakh students and teachers for six months.
This program will cover government schools (classes 1 to 12), engineering and technical institutions, and K-12 educators. It is named OpenAI Learning Accelerator, and it is a program specially designed for India.
Partnership with ministries and institutions
OpenAI will distribute these free licenses in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of India, AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), and Association for Reinventing School Education (ARISE).
