
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report on mental health. According to this report, more than one billion people worldwide suffered from mental health in 2021. The WHO’s two latest reports World Mental Health Today and Mental Health Atlas 2024 states that many countries have made programs regarding mental health but still lacking services and investment. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder effect
According to the report, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, which affect one in about 200 and one in 150 respectively, are a primary concern. He wrote that schizophrenia is considered to be the most disrupted in all health conditions in its intense state and is the most expensive mental disorder per capita for the society. This is the first estimate after Kovid – 19 epidemic that began in 2020. The report also states that there is an urgent need for continuous investment in mental health and care, so that services can be expanded to protect and promote mental health of people.
Need more spending on mental health
Since 2020, major countries have made significant progress in strengthening mental health policies and planning. However, research authors said that this progress has not changed in legal reform. Typically, governments around the world spend only two percent of the total health budget on mental health, which is unchanged since 2017. Per capita expenses in high -income countries have been found variation from 65 US dollars to lower income countries ranging from USD 0.04 US dollars. He further stated that globally, 13 mental health workers usually take care of one lakh people, which has an excessive decrease in lower and middle-income countries.
