Two students at the Zhejiang University of Technology, China, tried to shield their principal from rain during a speech, but their awkward grip on the umbrella left him drenched.
A video of the incident on the first day of the new school year on Wednesday has been circulating on Chinese social media. Viewers said jokingly “these are the two best umbrella holders in the school,” and the umbrellas “poured rainwater from both sides onto him.”

Witnesses said a teacher had offered the principal a raincoat, but he declined. When the rain got heavier, the two students stepped in to help, though their well-meant effort ended up drenching him completely.
The university said the act was spontaneous. “Our teachers and students value simplicity. Most people were moved rather than amused,” a school spokesperson said.
Some viewers said the image of the principal’s soaked shirt promoted the school better than any flyer could since it showed the true spirit of education: a sincere teacher-student bond, not outward perfection, built on sharing life’s small inconveniences.
Others said the principal’s speech in the rain showed his respect for students, while the students holding the umbrella showed their respect for him.
