Prince William and Princess Kate have paid tribute to the Duchess of Kent following her death yesterday evening. The royal couple said their thoughts are with her immediate family, her husband and their three children, and praised Katharine's charitable work.

They said: "Our thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas. The Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family. W & C."

The personal message was shared on Kate and William's official social media pages.

It comes just over two hours since Buckingham Palace announced the death of the much-loved royal.

Katharine was an extraordinary woman who famously converted to Catholicism in 1992 and 10 years later, she gave up full-time royal duties and her HRH title to pursue a life away from the spotlight.

She was known for consoling losing Wimbledon finalists, notably a tearful Jana Novotna in 1993, and presented trophies at the championships for many years.

The sad news was posted on the Royal Family's official website and a formal framed announcement was placed on the railings of Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Friday: "It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.

"The King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly The Duchess's life-long devotion to all the organisations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people."

The royal residence also lowered the union flag to half-mast as a mark of respect.

An online Book of Condolence will be available in the coming days.

The King, at Balmoral, has been informed and has approved Royal Mourning until the day of the funeral. The cause of death has not been revealed.

Details of her funeral will be announced in the coming days, although it is likely to be a Catholic service since the Duchess had converted to the religion.

It is likely to be well attended by members of the Royal Family, with the King and Queen, and both senior and non-working royals expected to pay their final respects.
