
New Delhi: Indias top boxer Nikhat Zareen made a strong comeback to international competition with a confident win in her opening match of the womens 51kg category at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on Saturday. The 29-year-old a two-time world champion had not taken part in any international tournament this year. However she looked sharp and completely outclassed the USA’s Jennifer Lozano winning the bout 5-0. But the day didn’t go well for the other two Indian boxers competing on Saturday. Who defeated Lovlina Borgohain? Lovlina Borgohain who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics was defeated 0-5 by Turkeys Busra Isildar in the second round of the women’s 75kg category. Meanwhile Hitesh Gulia put up a tough fight but lost 1-4 to the Netherlands’ Finn Robert Bos in the men’s 70kg category. What has India done for the first time? India has sent a 20-member team to the first-ever World Championships organised by World Boxing a newly formed global boxing authority and has made a positive start to the tournament. What happened on Friday and Saturday? In Friday nights matches Jaismine Lamboria who won gold at the World Boxing Cup in Astana beat Ukraines Daria-Olha Hutarina 5-0 in the womens 57kg category. Narender Berwal also began his campaign in the mens 90+kg division with a 4-1 win over Ireland’s Martin McDonagh. Later on Saturday two more Indian boxers were scheduled to compete: Sachin (mens 60kg) against Australias Jacob Cassar and Sanju (womens 60kg) versus Polands Aneta Rygielska.
