Tihar jail tour
Recently, a delegation of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of the United Kingdom arrived to inspect the Tihar Jail in Delhi. The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the conditions of the prison, so that the ongoing extradition cases in India, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, can be strengthened. The visit organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs is considered an important step for the legal processes going on in the UK courts.
Inspection of jail facilities
According to media reports, a four -member CPS team consisted of two experts and two British High Commission officials who visited Tihar Jail in July. A senior official said that the CPS team inspected the jail facilities, especially high security wards and was satisfied with the arrangements there. He also found that Tihar Jail facilities are in line with international standards.
Negotiations with prisoners
Tihar jail facilities won confidence
The team not only reviewed the high security wards, but also interacted with some prisoners. Officials assured that if necessary, a special “enclave” can be installed in the Tihar campus, which will meet the specific requirements of extradited individuals and ensure their safety.

The CPS team also held a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Investigation Agencies and senior officials of Tihar Jail. During this period, several aspects to extradition of suspects and legal needs of CPS prosecutors were discussed from the UK. Another official said that these tour and meetings are part of India’s efforts to bring back the fugitives who have taken shelter in the UK.
Status of fugitives in UK
Several high-profile fugitives in the UK, such as arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari and diamond businessman Nirav Modi, are arguing in the courts there that if they were extradited to India, they may have to face forcibly recovery, torture or violence from other prisoners or jail authorities in Tihar Jail.
India gets shocks
India has shocked many times in UK courts
India has recently been shocked in the UK courts regarding the status of Tihar Jail. On February 28 this year, the UK High Court rejected Sanjay Bhandari’s extradition, in which the prison circumstances were one of the main reasons. In April, the High Court did not even allow India to appeal to the Supreme Court, after which Bhandari became independent in London.
Silent couple case
Similarly, on April 11, Westminster Magistrate Court Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring released the accused couple, Virkaran Silent and his wife Ritika Stasti on unconditional bail in the Rs 750 crore fraud case. Goldspring, in its order, cited the Bhandari case, saying that the risk will remain until the assurance is not assured in Tihar Jail, the risk will remain.
