Eating popcorn while watching the film is a common habit, especially when it is ready in the microwave in a few minutes. But the question arises whether these instant popcorn are safe for health? Recently, some dieticians and health experts have shared important information on this subject, which every popcorn lover must know.
Dietician says that “if popcorn is made in a plain and correct way, it can be a healthy snack. But the microwave popcorn packets found in the market are sometimes filled with chemicals and additives, which can prove to be harmful to health in a long time.”
What is the danger in microwave popcorn?
1. Artificial flavors and preservatives:
The butter flavor or cheese that is mixed in these popcorn is not real. It is made up of a chemical called diacile, which can cause lung disease.
2. harmful elements in the layer of packets:
Most microwave popcorn packets contain elements like PFOA (perfluoroortanoic acid), which may be associated with cancer and hormonal disturbances according to research.
3. Excessive salt and trans fat:
These packets contain high amount of sodium and trans fat, which promotes high blood pressure, cholesterol and heart diseases.
Should microwave popcorn be abandoned completely?
Dietician says, “Not necessarily you stop eating popcorn. It is just important to understand what popcorn you are choosing and how to make it.”
What are healthy options?
Domestic popcorn: Buy maize grains from the market and make them by adding some oil in a heavy bottom pot. It is completely safe and without any chemicals.
Air-Popped Popcorn: If you have an airpopper machine then popcorn can be made without oil.
Choose low salt and unnecessary packets: If you like microwave popcorn, choose low-sodium and no-butter variants.
