Kanpur: In a shocking revelation from Sachendi, Kanpur, a woman and her nephew have been arrested for the murder of her husband, committed nearly ten months ago.

The case came to light after a police investigation based on a complaint by the victim's mother.

According to the police, Lakshmi, around 40, along with her 25-year-old nephew Amit, murdered her husband Shivveer (45) on November 2, 2024. The motive behind the murder was reportedly a romantic relationship between the two accused.

The incident occurred after Shivveer’s mother, Savitri Devi, had left for her native place in Banda on October 30, 2024. Upon her return, she was informed by her daughter-in-law that Shivveer had left for Gujarat for a job after receiving a phone call.

Suspicious of Lakshmi’s inconsistent statements and concerned about her son’s prolonged absence, Savitri Devi approached the police on May 6, 2025, and filed a missing person’s report.

On Friday, she again met senior officers and raised concerns about an alleged love affair between Lakshmi and her grandson Amit, which was also confirmed by villagers.

The police picked up Amit for interrogation yesterday evening. Under interrogation, Amit confessed to the crime. He revealed that Lakshmi had drugged Shivveer by mixing sleeping pills into his tea.

Once he was unconscious, she struck him on the head with a rod, killing him. The body was then buried in the field behind their house, and 12 kg of salt was added in an attempt to hasten decomposition.

However, some time later, stray dogs unearthed the remains. The duo then collected the bones, placed them in a sack and disposed of them in the Panki canal, located about 700 meters away.

During the murder, two of Lakshmi’s children—a 13-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son—woke up due to the noise, but Lakshmi reportedly calmed them down. The eldest son, aged 15, was not at home at the time. Amit, who is physically handicapped, was actively involved in the crime.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) West Kapil Dev Singh confirmed that a case of kidnapping has now been converted into one of murder. Both accused are in custody.

The police, accompanied by a forensic team, visited the crime scene yesterday and are working to recover skeletal remains and other evidence.

Inspector Dinesh Singh Bisht of Sachendi Police Station is leading the investigation. Forensic examinations are expected to continue today.
