Understanding Pitru Paksha 2025

Pitru Paksha 2025: The period known as Shradh Paksha spans from the full moon of Bhadrapada to the new moon of Ashwin, commonly referred to as Pitru Paksha. If you plan to conduct Shradh, Tarpan, or Pinddaan for your ancestors during this time, it is essential to know the appropriate and inappropriate locations for these rituals according to scriptures. Let’s explore this in detail.

Locations Where Shradh Should Not Be Conducted

Prohibited Locations for Shradh:

1. **Dev Sthan**: It is advised not to perform Shradh within any temple or sacred site, as these are considered Devbhoomi. Always consult a Pandit or scholar for guidance on suitable locations.

2. **Unholy Land**: Shradh should not take place on land that is deemed impure. This includes thorny or barren areas, as well as places where open defecation occurs, even if they have been cleansed.

3. **Private Property**: Performing Shradh on someone else's land is not permitted. If it is necessary to conduct Shradh at another person's residence, compensation or dakshina should be offered to the landowner.

4. **Cremation Grounds**: Shradh is not to be performed in cremation grounds unless they are recognized as pilgrimage sites. Some cremation grounds, like the Chakratirth in Ujjain, hold this status, but it is advisable to consult a scholar before proceeding.

Permissible Locations for Shradh

Acceptable Locations for Shradh:

1. **Riverbanks**: Shradh can be performed along the banks of any sacred river or at river confluences, following the proper rituals.

2. **Pilgrimage Sites**: Any recognized pilgrimage location mentioned in scriptures is suitable for Shradh. There are over 64 designated sites across India, including Gaya, Nashik, and Ujjain.

3. **Seashore**: Conducting Shradh at the seashore is permissible, provided a holy spot is chosen for the rituals.

4. **Home**: Ideally, Shradh rituals should be performed at home. For special rituals aimed at the salvation of ancestors, locations like riverbanks or Gaya are recommended.

5. **Banyan Tree**: Shradh can be conducted under a Banyan tree, provided it is not a sacred site.

6. **Cowshed**: A cowshed, where bulls are not tied, can be a suitable place for Shradh after purifying the area with cow dung.

7. **Mountains**: Shradh can be performed on any holy mountain peak, even if it is not a designated sacred site.

8. **Forests**: Shradh can also take place in any forest, large or small, by selecting and cleansing an appropriate area for the rituals.
